The bad: The dinner situation is for the birds. You must make reservations, and only one of the restaurants (the one that also does the room service orders, so long waits) are casual at dinner time, so forget being comfortable on vacation if you want to eat dinner. Collars and slacks are required! Room service food is pretty awful. Every time we ordered dinner, it took well over 1.5 hours as well. Tonight, our reservation was 830pm, and we didn't get our food until 1010pm. Our group of 8 never once got drunk from any of the mixed drinks, even when they had extra shots in them. The staff is not on the same page, often giving bad information about restaurant hours, availability, etc etc. The lunch food, and dinner desserts are mediocre at best.
The good: despite the hour+ waits, dinners were delicious. Comparable restaurant quality would easily be $50-$75 per person without drinks and dessert. The pools are amazing. There are so many, you can easily find a private pool most times of the day. The rooms are great, even though we did have a pipe leak, it was fixed the same day. The last Playa Del Carmen all inclusive we stayed at, was a sales pitch 24/7. You couldn't use a restroom in the main area without someone trying to get you to buy a bracelet or a time share. This place is not like that at all, which I appreciate. Only one spa worker was pushy.

Mattresses need replaced. My back still hurts, I 5' and weigh about 100lbs. Food and service were good. Beach was beautiful. Everything worked properly in the rooms. We had a group of 10 family members in 5 rooms, hotel staff accommodated seating/tables for us to have dinner together.

Wonderful Winter Getaway - Royal Hideaway Playacar
We came with a travel group who booked the resort in its entire capacity, so many of the guests were friends already or had a least been on vacations together before. This resort is a standout for it's exemplary service, fantastic cuisine across diverse dining options, gorgeous white-sand beach and spacious, lovely suites with private concierge service. The resort boasts beautiful bars, pools, hot tubs and lush landscaping as well, so traversing the property is a joy. We were delighted with the care taken in catering to us, to ensure our stay was comfortable. 100% recommend.
As a group, we came in with our own entertainers, DJ's, etc. so I cannot speak to the usual entertainment offered by the resort.
We were however thoroughly impressed by all aspects.
100% recommend.

This was the most incredible time I’ve ever had. The beautiful views the very friendly and courteous staff made this an experience of a lifetime. Everything was amazing from the moment we checked in until we checked out. 5 star all the way. Thank you Royal Hideway for making this the most memorable vacation ever. We cannot wait to return

I'll start with the positive points:
-One of the most beautiful beach in Playa del Carmen (during our trip in February there was little sargassum and it was picked up every day)
We visited the beaches further away from the other resorts and the public one in Playa del Carmen and either it's all eroded or there's a lot of sargassum and it's crowded.
-the pools are beautiful and well placed throughout the resort
-the large pools are clean and well filtered
-the restaurants are well distributed throughout the Resort and offer a variety of cuisine and are very good (for evening dinners with reservations)
-the best restaurants for us were the Palazzio and the Ventana
-our room was well air conditioned and the bed comfortable, the bathtub in our room was great to use in addition to the shower, a beautiful terrace with furniture to relax on.
-the Resort gardens are beautiful and full of animals (coatis, sereques, birds, iguanas) and the buildings are small enough to feel really quiet.
-few rooms so the Resort is very quiet and well frequented, almost all couples. Not much noise at night. A good place to relax
-service on the beach for drinks
-the waiters are pleasant and the bartenders are very generous with the doses of alcohol
-the lobby of the hotel is beautiful and smells very good
-some activities in the evening and during the day but not enough communication on that so we missed the evening shows or the activities during the day
The negatives:
-the breakfast and lunch buffets are not worthy of a 5-star Resort (I've eaten better in 3-star motels in the USA)
-fast room service but really not good, the burger meat was disgusting.
-catch of the day was more like catch of the week because it was seabass all week that we were there
-the small pools near the beach are not clean (the water is cloudy, full of leaves and insects or sand at the bottom, the water filtration system was never on during the stay)
-the air conditioning in the room blows right in your face and is noisy to the point of waking you up at night. The walls showed signs of humidity and bubbling paint, the legs of the beds were broken, the bed bounced, the fridge did not cool beverages.
- lock on the room door half broken which prevented one time out of 3 from closing the door properly and it was always necessary to check if the door was locked
- a bad experience at the Ventana restaurant not with the food which is excellent and congratulations to the cook but with the bartender who after asking for a drink with mezcal made a drink without mezcal, after having made the remark to him I ask for another drink with mezcal and he still did not put any. While I checked the bar had several bottles of mezcal.
- very few activities apart from yoga or aquagym, we could not borrow a kayak or sail boat because of the wind. I wonder what people do in the Resort when it rains because even the swimming pools are closed in rainy weather.
-impossible to have a deckchair by the pool or a bed because everything is either reserved in advance by the regulars of the hotel who have the privilege of reserving them (after coming 20x to the hotel they obtain the privilege status) or by the people who get up at 6am to go and put their personal belongings on them. In 1 week we could not have a single deckchair by the pool (those on the beach are however always available and protected from the sun if you want)
I would particularly like to thank our concierge Gabriela who was very dedicated and kind, our very funny and entertaining cook at Azian, Carlos the manager of the Grill, Fernando the receptionist, Wilson the waiter at the ventana. And all the others who made our stay a good relaxing stay.
