A very nice hotel with very attentive and friendly staff. The 'night time' service where they bring you chocolates before bed was a lovely touch.
One member of staff that really stood out to us was Xiying, who we talked to in the little gift shop by reception. She was very friendly and lovely, shared information about how and where the Maltese glass is made. She was very helpful.
We felt welcome as soon as we stepped through the front doors, with the smiling staff bringing us welcome drinks. The hotel is huge, very clean everywhere.
The rooms could have been a bit bigger as well as the balcony but still very nice and I understand this isn't something that can be changed easily so not too much of a complaint.
The private beach was nice however cannot be walked on without shoes, so maybe could fill it with actual sand instead of stones.
All round great place great breakfast great service.

Enjoyed my stay at the GHE . However there were a few niggles, hotel is in need of a major refurbishment as the bathrooms are certainly dated! My room had a corner shower which was fine apart from needing to be a contortionist to squeeze in past the toilet which blocked the dor! Location is fine for Valletta but traffic in the area is crazy! Service was OK mostly. Breakfast team were a bit gruff and snappy...

An Incredible Stay at the Grand Hotel Excelsior!
From start to finish, my experience at the Grand Hotel Excelsior was nothing short of exceptional. The hotel itself is stunning, offering beautiful views of the harbour, elegant old world décor, and a range of top-notch amenities that made my stay truly memorable.
A special mention goes to Irina at reception. She welcomed me with a warm smile and made the check-in process seamless and efficient. Throughout my stay, she was incredibly helpful, providing excellent recommendations and always going above and beyond to ensure my comfort. Her professionalism and kindness truly set the tone for my visit.
Additionally, I want to thank Godwin, the hotel’s driver. He was not only friendly and courteous but also incredibly knowledgeable about the local area, making my transfers both pleasant and informative. His impeccable service added a personal touch to my trip, and I appreciated his promptness and attention to detail.
Overall, the Grand Hotel Excelsior offers a luxurious experience with outstanding service. I will definitely return and recommend it to anyone visiting Malta. Thank you to the entire team for making my stay so special!

The cleanliness levels were appalling. Bar areas, general reception areas and rooms were badly cleaned. Issues in the buffet area led to us never eating there again due to disgusting hygiene practices. Overall the waiting and cleaning staff are not doing their jobs and it leads to an unclean environment.
Main staircase in foyer was filthy and wasn't once vacuumed in 7 days. Upstairs loos were old, tatty, in need of an update and rarely cleaned.
Pubic hair in serving area of kitchen, on a platter of food! When pointed out to chef he tried to use serving tongs used by customers to remove it!!
Then when again pointed it that this was disgusting and poor practice he again used the same tongs to transfer the food to a new plate, rather than dispose of the contaminated food!
Obviously there's little to zero understanding of basic hygiene in the kitchen area so we reported this to the management and chose to eat elsewhere for the remainder of our holiday
3 weeks after retuning from this awful hotel they have STILL to return the Room Damage Deposit. €150 that has conveniently gone missing, and that the hotel now are ignoring my emails about. So as we as being unhygienic, they appear to be corrupt and criminal as well.

Overall, I had a lovely stay at the Grand Hotel Excelsior. The service was excellent, staff were friendly and welcoming, and the views were stunning. The room was spacious and comfortable, and the location is ideal for exploring Valletta.
That said, there are a few areas where things could be improved. The pool area is quite small for a hotel of this size, and the queues for the lifts can get frustrating at peak times. Some parts of the hotel could benefit from better maintenance, and the breakfast options, while decent, felt a bit average and repetitive over a few days. Also worth noting: the massage and spa prices were extremely high – though that’s run by an external company.
Despite these things, I’d still recommend the hotel and would consider staying again. Just don’t go in expecting a full 5-star experience on all fronts.
