We stayed at Grand Hotel Excelsior Malta, and our experience was mixed. On the positive side, the hotel has an excellent location, stunning views, comfortable beds, and high-quality linens. Breakfast was tasty and varied, the restaurant was good, and the staff was polite and tried to be helpful. A nice touch was the complimentary bottle of wine and water in the room, as well as the turndown service with a chocolate treat and closed curtains. However, the hotel is clearly outdated and in need of renovation, and the service falls short of five-star expectations.
Main Issues:
❌ Rooms urgently need renovation – furniture, plumbing, and equipment are outdated. Although I specifically requested a renovated room in advance, I was given an old one with a non-functioning toilet. We reported it to the reception, but they couldn’t fix it. When we returned to the hotel in the evening, we had to switch rooms.
❌ Weak service in booking and additional services – The airport transfer was 25 minutes late, and the flowers I had ordered for arrival were only delivered the next evening (and I was charged for them!). The sparkling wine I requested was warm.
❌ Coffee in rooms and at breakfast is instant Nescafé, and proper coffee is available only at an extra charge. Also, no sparkling wine at breakfast, which is unusual for a 5★ hotel.
❌ Saunas require an additional fee, whereas in most five-star hotels, they are included in the stay.
❌ Billing issues at check-out – Upon departure, the hotel attempted to charge me again for my stay, even though I had already paid upon check-in. I had to present my receipt before they finally acknowledged the payment.
Sadly, the luxury of this hotel seems to be a thing of the past.

The ⭐ speaks for itself i would recommend this hotel 100 times over. All the staff are really helpful. The concierges are all good with knowledge of the area to help you plan your holiday.
Rooms very clean bed was really comfy.
It has a spa treatment area if you would like to relax one day. It has everything you need for a great stay.

A great hotel with excellent service. While it is a luxurious property, its age is noticeable. The rooms are somewhat worn and could use an upgrade, but staying here is still an enjoyable experience. Everything is clean and well-maintained.
The pool area is fantastic, and the beach is charming. The gym has all the essentials you need.
Breakfast is excellent, offering a wide selection and high-quality options.
The location is ideal, with a short distance to Valletta city center and the ferry to Sliema.

Pretty unimpressed with this hotel. Upon entering it has a lovely appearance and we were given a free drink while checking in. After that there was no offer to have our luggage taken to our room. The room was dank, dark and the balcony view was pretty sad having to look at a dirty wall. Outside the hotel smells of mould. A couple of hours after check-in I tried to have a nap, but a cleaning lady tried barging into the room even though I had a do not disturb sign on the door. She asked to clean the room and I responded politely that it would not be necessary as we had just checked in and the room is clean. She responded saying no one was meant to be checked in to the room and gave me a dirty look before she eventually left after I told her again that we had just checked in and repeated that the room is clean. This interaction made me feel unsafe and just made me feel aware that staff maybe don’t communicate with each other well and don’t respect the privacy of guests. The cost of this hotel is not worth what they offer and it does not feel luxurious as they seem to advertise. I’ll also add that they provide a warning not to drink the tap water as it is not safe, I made myself a tea from said tap water as I forgot, and had to use the bottled water provided to make any hot drinks after that, considering staff are aware of the bad tap water, more water should be provided for the room as it takes two bottles to fill the kettle which left us with one bottle for drinking water, this is concerning. My husband and I will not be returning here. Thanks but no thanks.

Excellent hotel and excellent service in a great location. Stayed for a week in February in 2 rooms. 2 adults and 3 teenagers in rooms on 7th floor.
Great impression on arrival and nice to receive a welcome drink. Very good breakfast buffet with a lovely view. Took a couple of days to realise we could get pancakes and poached eggs at the omelette station. Very good selection of cold meats, fresh fruits, breads, pastries and hot breakfast.
I'd read a few reviews that decor was dated which concerned me before we arrived but we really enjoyed our stay and attention to detail. Little touches like an umbrella and torch in the wardrobe, robes and slippers, bottled water provided. The turn down service was a pleasant surprise and lovely to return to a little chocolate waiting. The mattress wasn't the most comfortable but was fine.
Staff were all helpful and friendly, especially Jordan the friendly doorman.
We had drinks in the lounge bar several times and lunch on arrival. Food was a little pricey but it was a nice place to sit in an evening or to enjoy a coffee with a view.
An easy walk to Valletta. Lots of steps outside but manageable and only a few minutes from the city centre and bus station.
